Cornwall Qualifier, June 11th 2017
The Point at Polzeath
Monday 12th June 2017
A mixed team of four from Bowood Park GC will head to the headquarters of England Golf at Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire after comprehensively winning a spot in the finals of the England Golf Club Team Championship.
In a Cornwall qualifier for the event the team of Ryan Cathrae, Kim Mundy, Tom Haley and Sam Hobbs scored an outstanding 91 points in the two scores to count stableford format. The 4 combined to score a total of 9 gross birdies in their round and despite the 90% shot allowance made the shots count on most holes. With three of the team playing off single figure allowances the team total was impressive.
For much of the competition the lead had been held by early starters from Trevose (Ross Oliver, Margaret Oliver, Julian Richards & Jane Watts) who themselves returned an excellent 86 points only to be eclipsed by the team from Bowood. Third spot which was decided on countback went to the host club team of Colin Hume, Chris Gill, Jean Tatam and Sally King who had an outstanding 48 points on their front 9 but on their own admission fell away on the back to also return 86 points.
The team from Bowood will now travels as Cornwall's representatives to Woodhall Spa to take part in the finals in mid August.
Prizes were presented to the top 3 teams by Cornwall Ladies County Golf Association President Cynthia Penhale. CGU Secretary Chris Pountney thanked the Point at Polzeath for yet another warm welcome and for the excellent condition of the course. A number of the competitors were first time visitors to the venue and commented very favourably on their impressions of it.
