The 109th Ladies Championship returned to Mullion after 6 years. Last year’s Champion, Georgia Price (Bude & N.C) iunable to defend her title due to National commitments and 2 time past champion Emily Toy (C.B.)  also unable to continue after the 1st day.

The smaller field of 54 contestants is wide open with 6 up and coming juniors, Danielle Price, (P’porth), Megan Giles (St. Mel), Victoria Pawley (Tre), Laura Andrew & Olivia Trewhela (Tru) and Amy Butt (T.P.) competing against past champions Jan Sargeant (2) (P’porth) and Liz Bird (New) who won this event at Mullion in 2004.

The Ladies Championship was founded in 1896 when Royal Cornwall (Bodmin), Bude & N.C., and Falmouth contributed to buy the trophy. Mullion joined the rota in1907 and has hosted the event many times.

Sunday: Finals: CHAMPIONSHIP: Sun shone all day for the 3 finals. Laura and Danielle had a tight match in the morning and Laura was 2 up after 18 holes. In the afternoon Laura continued playing well to go 3 up after 19 but Danielle won the 25th only for Laura to gain control again to win the match on the 32nd 5/3. The quality of golf was of a high calibre and both players deserve credit. The team selected to represent Cornwall at Wragg Barn at the intercounty match week is Laura Andrew, Wendy Briggs, Megan Giles, Jan Harrison, Gemma Marsland, Victoria Pawley, Danielle Price, Georgia Price, Emily Toy and Olivia Trewhela

Advanced Plate: Jan Sargeant played steadily to defeat Michelle Burgess in a repeat of last year’s final.
Plate: Katie Sandow played very well to win the Plate against Nikki for the second year running


Saturday: semi-finals.: The first semi-final between Laura and Olivia was a close encounter with only ever 2 holes between them. The match was all square after 18 holes, they halved the par 3 19th and Laura claimed the match on the 20th with a 4. In the 2nd semi-final Danielle continued her good form to win her match on the 15th so 2 juniors reach tomorrow’s final.

Advanced Plate (1st round Losers): Past Champion Jan meets Michelle in the final which is a repeat of last year.
The Plate 2nd 16 qualifiers: Both Nikki and Katie played well and will meet in the final tomorrow.


Friday: Matchplay: Another fine day prevailed for the start of the match-play stages but the dry conditions has made the course hard and bouncy making play tricky . Top qualifier 17 year old Laura Andrew played very well with 5 birdies on the 1st 9 to defeat Lyn in the morning. Victoria had a tough match against past champion Jan holing a 25 foot birdie putt on the 19th to claim victory. 2nd qualifier Megan cruised through to the 2nd round. In the afternoon it was nip and tuck between Laura and Victoria for Laura to win on the 18th. Olivia played well to reach the 1st semi-final. Danielle defeated past Captain Jan and Gemma had a cracking match against Megan to reach the 2nd semi-final.


Thursday: 36 holes qualifying: The Ladies Championship returns to Mullion after 6 years and on a fine morning 54 players from 13 Clubs set out in the 109th Championship. Defending Champion Georgia Price is unable to play due to National commitments. Past Champion Emily Toy is playing for Carlyon Bay in the Western Morning News but cannot continue in the championship. There are 6 juniors in the field, Danielle Price (Perran). Laura Andrew, Olivia Trewhela, and Emily Wilson (Tru) Victoria Pawley (Tre)and Amy Butt (T.P.). The best morning score of 2 over 74 was returned by Emily Toy followed by Laura Andrew 77. In the afternoon Emily played 1 under on 71. Top qualifier was Laura Andrew 142 and 2nd Megan Giles 149. The Western Morning News Cup for the best 4 scratch scores was won by Perranporth 651 followed by Launceston on 661
