clcgalogoPrepared for Delegates Meeting

The Junior County Championships was held at West Cornwall Golf Club in June this year. This event was combined with the CGU Junior County Championships which worked very well so we will continue with this arrangement in the future.

Eighteen girls entered and the winner, with a gross 75, was Megan Giles from St Mellion, 2 shots ahead of Danielle Price, from Perranporth. Polly Gammon, from Trevose, won the Handicap Cup with a nett 70 and Sophia Bishop, from Killiow, won the Stableford Cup with 37 points.

The SW Girls Inter Counties was held at Exeter Golf & Country Club at the end of July. The team included Captain, Victoria Pawley, Vice Captain, Laura Andrew, Danielle Price, Emily Wilson, Olivia Trewhela, Casey Olds and rookies Hannah Body and Kira Barnes.

The first days match saw a 3 – 3 draw against Dorset. This was followed by another 3 – 3 draw against Somerset the following day and a 4 -2 loss against Gloucestershire. The girls were not going to give in that easily and came back fighting on the final day, beating Devon 4 – 2 in the morning and beating Wiltshire 3 ½ - 2 ½ in the afternoon which gave them a final position of joint 2nd with Dorset with the winners Gloucestershire.

The Order of Merit, which I set up this year, has been a great success and has seen a rise in the number of entries from the girls to majority of the Junior Opens. Winner of the Scratch Cup was Kira Barnes, from West Cornwall, who has played consistently well over the last few months, bringing her handicap down from 16 to 11.

Winner of the Handicap Cup was Maddie Watson, from St Austell who has also done well at bringing her handicap down over the last few months from 32 to 24.

The girls played in their annual Friendly match against the County Vets at Truro Golf Club at the end of September. Junior Captain, Victoria Pawley paired up with Hannah Body and brought us our first win with 6&5. This was then followed up by the 5th group, Kira Barnes and Sophia Hallett, who won with a fantastic 8&7.
Meanwhile the middle 3 groups were having more of a battle with Danielle Price and Emily Jenkin eventually loosing 2&1. Laura Andrew and Katie Jenkin managed to hold their opponents at bay winning 3&2 and Olivia Trewhela and Maddie Watson, despite being all square after 13, turned up the pressure and sealed the deal by winning 2 up on the 18th.
The final pairing of Casey Olds and Hannah McGrath added to the final score by winning with another great 5&4 to give the County Girls a 5 : 1 win. My thanks go to Truro Golf Club for hosting this event and also to the County Vets for playing with the girls in a match which everyone really enjoys.
Looking ahead, plans are currently being made for this winter’s Development Academy and we are hoping to have Katie Rule again who did a fantastic job of coaching the girls last winter.
