Over the Easter holidays we had two friendly matches (both home and away) with the Devon Girls. The matches are played as 2 BBB matchplay off full handicap. The first of these matches was held at Exeter Golf Club which is also where this year’s South West Inter Counties Tournament will be held so was a great opportunity for the girls to get to see the course. Despite all of our team having to give shots we won 2½-1½ getting the crucial half in the last match on the 18th green!
The second match was held at Lanhydrock Golf Club. We were able to field 10 players this time and, despite me trying to mix things up by using some higher handicappers, we were still the side to give all the shots with most of the girls having to give over 20! Our girls weren’t going to go down without a fight but, despite the girls playing some excellent golf, we found that Cornwall’s birdies weren’t quite a match with Devon’s pars and we lost 3-2.
As you will hear from the Lady Captains report, all the coaching the girls have had over the winter months through the Development Academy sessions at Mullion have paid off. All of the girls who entered managed to qualify for the Championship with 3 of them making it to the last 4. Needless to say, I am very proud of them all.
The Order of Merit competition which I set up to encourage more entries into the Junior Opens seems to be going well. Falmouth recently held their Junior Open at which 7 girls entered compared to 3 the previous year. Hopefully this trend continues for the rest of the Junior Opens.
At the end of May we held the Under 15 Championship and Futures Cup at Killiow Golf Club. This year we combined this event with the CGU Under 14s and Under 12s Championships which, although we had a few teething problems with slow play, overall it was a great success and definitely the way forward. Unfortunately the girls had to deal with rain almost the whole way through the competition but it didn’t dampen any of their spirits and their smiles shone through. Winning the Futures Cup, for handicaps greater than 36, with 30 points was Charlotte Jenkin for West Cornwall. The Under 15 Nett Salver was won by Polly Gammon from Trevose with an incredible nett 60 (11 under her handicap). The overall winner and Under 15 Champion 2017 was Kira Barnes from West Cornwall with a gross 88. Many thanks go to Killiow Golf Club for hosting the Championship and presenting a course which was in excellent condition.
Finally, coming up we have the Under 18 County Championship which will be held on the 18th June at West Cornwall Golf Club. Once again, we will be combining this event with the CGU who will be holding their Under 18 County Championship. At this event we will also be announcing the team who will be representing Cornwall in the upcoming Girls South West Inter-Counties Tournament at Exeter Golf Club in July.
