U18 Junior Girls Report
I will endeavour to keep my report brief but there are full reports on all matches and competitions on the website or in my Delegates Meeting reports should you want more information.
I will start, however, by saying a huge thank you to Professional Katie Rule who coached the Under 18s this year and to Mullion for allowing us to use their course and facilities. Katie’s hard work and enthusiasm paid off in the Ladies County Championships where the 4 Juniors who entered dominated the knockouts and we had 3 in the Semi-Finals with the eventual County Champion being Laura Andrew. I’m pleased to announce that Katie will be coaching the Girls again next year.
In April I took 8 Girls to Exeter Golf Club to play a friendly match against the Devon Girls where we won 2 ½ - 1 ½. The home match was played at Lanhydrock where 10 girls competed and we lost 3 – 2.
For the first time, this year we combined the Junior Championships with the CGU Junior Championships which was a great success and we will be doing this in future years.
The U15 County Championship and Futures Cup was played at Killiow Golf Club in May. Winner, with a gross 88 was Kira Barnes from West Cornwall. Winner of the Under 15 Nett Salver was Polly Gammon from Trevose and winner of the Futures Cup was Charlotte Jenkin from West Cornwall scoring 30 points over a shortened 9 holes.
The Junior County Championship was held at West Cornwall Golf Club in June. Winner was Megan Giles from St Mellion with a gross 75. Danielle Price, from Perranporth, won the Runner Up Salver with a gross 77. The Handicap Cup was won by Polly Gammon, from Trevose, with a nett 70 and Sophia Bishop, from Killiow, won the Stableford Cup with 37 points.
This year’s SW Girls Inter-Counties was held at Exeter Golf Club and the team consisted of Captain Victoria Pawley, Vice-Captain Laura Andrew, Danielle Price, Emily Wilson, Olivia Trewhela, Casey Olds and rookies Kira Barnes and Hannah Body.
On the first day we drew against Dorset. The second day saw a loss against Gloucestershire and a draw against Somerset seeing us in joint 4th going into the final day. The Girls’ spirit and determination on the last day saw us win against Devon and Wiltshire giving a final position of tied 2nd place with the winners being Gloucestershire. Well done to all the girls.
In September we played our annual friendly match against the County Vets at Truro Golf Club. This match is always enjoyed by all and it makes me very proud to hear the lovely feedback that I get from the Vets. Despite the Vets putting up a strong fight the Girls won 5 – 1.
This year I introduced an Order of Merit Competition for the girls which has seen a rise in the number of entries to majority of the Junior Opens. Winner of the Scratch Cup was Kira Barnes who managed to bring her handicap down from 16 to 11 over the course of the competition and now plays off 10. Winner of the Handicap Cup was Maddie Watson, from St Austell, who started the competition on a handicap of 32 and finished on 24
I have thoroughly enjoyed my 2nd year with the Juniors and am super proud of all their achievements. I would like to say a big thank you to all the golf clubs, mentioned in this report, for allowing us to use your courses and facilities.
My final big thanks goes to our Captain, Victoria Pawley, who, not only has made my job easier throughout the year, has also been very supportive and a fantastic Captain to all the Juniors and will be sadly missed. Along with her we are also losing Emily Wilson and Olivia Trewhela who have now turned 18 and it’s sad to see such big characters go. We wish them and Victoria all the best in their future golf as adults.
U15 Junior Girls Report
The competitive year for our youngest golfers started in March with the first round of the U12 Mini Tour. This is a 9 hole stableford event open to boys and girls with assisted and unassisted competitions. Over 50 juniors took part in each of the 5 events played at St Enodoc, Trevose, Truro & Newquay culminating in the final round at St Austell in July followed by a presentation meal. The winner of the CLCGA cup was Emma Longley from Trevose GC.
In July the U14 girls played a team event against the U12 boys here at Tehidy although the girls all played extremely well the boys were the eventual winners.
In August the girls again took on the U12 boys in a match play event. There were 9 individual matches with 3 of our younger girls playing 12 holes. Again the girls played well and despite some very close matches, the boys proved to be too strong winning 6-3.
The girls who played in the matches were:
Kira Barnes, Katie Jenkin, Charlotte Jenkin – West Cornwall
Polly Gammon, Emma Longley – Trevose
Maisie Drewett – Falmouth
Sophia Hallett – Mullion
Maddie Watson, Hannah McGrath – St Austell
Lizzy Nile – Carlyon Bay
Ruby Stephens – China Fleet
Sienna Hickling - Newquay
Unfortunately the planned Dallas Scramble at St Enodoc in October was cancelled due to bad weather and this will now be played in the Spring.
Finally, if there are any girls that you think we should know about please speak to me or Cath.
